"Special Ops" is an Indian action espionage thriller series available on Disney+ Hotstar, created and directed by Neeraj Pandey, with co-direction by Shivam Nair. The series was produced under Pandey’s production banner, Friday Storytellers, which focuses on digital content. The story revolves around Himmat Singh, played by Kay Kay Menon, a dedicated officer of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Singh assembles a team of five agents to hunt down the mastermind behind multiple terror attacks in India.
The series features a talented cast, including Vinay Pathak, Karan Tacker, Vipul Gupta, Muzamil Ibrahim, Meher Vij, Saiyami Kher, Divya Dutta, Revathi Pillai, and Sajjad Delafrooz. The background score was composed by Advait Nemlekar, with Sudheer Palsane and Arvind Singh handling cinematography, and Praveen Kathikuloth as the editor.
"Special Ops" was filmed in diverse locations, including India, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, to bring authenticity to its global espionage narrative. The series was originally conceptualized by Neeraj Pandey in 2010, intended to be aired on Star Plus, but the project was later revived in 2019 for a digital release.
Premiering on March 17, 2020, the series received critical acclaim for its intense storytelling, gripping action, and strong performances, particularly from Kay Kay Menon. It earned eight nominations at the inaugural Filmfare OTT Awards, winning three. Following the success of the first season, the series expanded into a franchise, leading to the release of "Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story" on November 12, 2021, which further explores the backstory of Himmat Singh.
